I do not know how to be sure that they are all the same.
I am able to follow directions well, so any help related to any of your experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm no certified computer nerd, but I can do things like disassemble and clean the insides, change the hard drive, and add RAM, as well as troubleshoot basic issues involving the OS, network/router/modem, and software. There are also several units available which appear to be recent postings I define recent by the lack of customer feedback as evidenced by no ratings displayed. Most are rated 21/2-31/2 stars further reading of specific posted ratings reveal serious problems (incompatibility, lack of tech support, and inability to get product to work as stated).
I'm initially inclined to believe that the products which are prime-eligible would be the better choices this belief is offset by the ratings of these. I would sure like to get this right the first go-round.

There are at least 25-30 choices ranging in price from the teens to around $70. Question 1) My existing HD has a capacity of nearly 600 G and I've used only 1/4 of that.

It uses different driver as mini vci but function the same. If you are looking to spend less, go for mangoose MFC clone cable for Toyota. If your budget extends to $495, you can buy a Drew Technologies Mongoose Pro, which is a unit actually tested by Toyota and officially supported for use with Techstream. – VCX is a standard Passthru programming tool, which can do online ECU programming – model: diagnostic test for heavy truck and diesel models till 2016 – multilanguage: Chinese, English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, ect. – multi-system: WINDOWS XP and Windows 7/8/10 – better hardware design than mini vci and Denso IT2 Its worth an additional 50 dollars for the VXDiag version. It connects and reads codes much quicker than a Mini VCI cable. The VXDIAG VCX Nano uses it’s own firmware. The cable will work on 10 year old Toyotas like some in the GS forum have said but they will not work on the 2011 Prius as some on PriusChat said. The 1.4.1 firmware does not support active tests. They are all fake of course but the good fakes use the same firmware as the real Xhorse cable. The knock off cables use 1.4.1 or 1.4.6 (latest). – ALL communication protocols supported for Toyota (1996 – latest): – High reliability using SMD chip, and certified by CE and FCC – Latest Techstream v13 (till April 2019) Many of us have gone with using the Mini VCI cable with Toyota Techstream software, and it’s mentioned as an improved variation on this theme. Version 2.0.4 will connect and read codes. You can still find 2.0.4 clone on the aftermarket. The real Xhorse one is out of production. Original Xhorse MINI VCI has newer firmware 2.0.4.
